Picual
Picual Typeface – Information
Picual is a quirky sans serif type family designed for packaging and branding in natural and organic contexts. Its peculiar shapes give it a handcrafted, slightly imprecise feel. Hexagonal rounds and angled terminals, paired with subtly softened corners, create a characterful and inviting tone across a wide range of applications. From artisanal pantry packaging and organic market signage to sustainability-focused brands, Picual feels at home wherever a human, grounded voice is needed. It also lends itself naturally to outdoor and adventure-oriented projects.
Picual is also the name of an olive variety known for producing excellent olive oil. Originally from Spain, it is now cultivated in other parts of the world, including California, where Picual (the typeface) was designed.
The type family comes in four straightforward weights (Light, Regular, Medium, and Bold) and three widths, from Standard to Condensed. These twelve styles cover a broad range of applications and can be easily combined in clear hierarchies. For finer control, Picual is also available as a single variable font, allowing seamless interpolation across all weights and widths.
Despite its friendly, low-key appearance, Picual is far from simple. It features an extended character set supporting over 200 Latin languages and includes a useful range of OpenType features, such as stylistic alternates for I, a, g, k, and the ampersand; circled numbers; automatic fractions; case-sensitive punctuation; and a discretionary Th ligature. The twelve-style family is also available as a variable font, bringing all styles together in a single, flexible file.■
