MUX
Mux Typeface – Information
Mux is a utilitarian typeface based on the core principles of seven-segment displays. With a radically simplified design of the individual segments, it moves beyond the iconic red LED displays that became synonymous with digital progress. The design evokes that era's technical confidence—a visual language that feels both precise and graphic. Its essential construction works in a data display or a branding project, comfortable handling technical precision or visual impact.
Popularized in the 70s and ubiquitous by the 80s, seven-segment displays emerged in an era of optimistic and imaginative visions of space, a proliferating consumer electronics culture and the rise of arcade gaming. This era had a utilitarian, technical aesthetic. The seven-segment display was as much functional technology as it was a cultural icon. Digital meant progress. A device without a display felt incomplete, outdated, and untrustworthy.
Breaking the severe grid of the seven segment’s construction allows Mux to map out a character set covering over 200 Latin languages. All while respecting the underlying geometry that made the classic displays so iconic.
The 7 weights of Mux are inspired by photographic bokeh, where highlights morph into circular shapes. In Mux the segments inflate to large overlapping blobs, obscuring the letterform and creating radical new shapes. At the extreme end of the spectrum it sacrifices legibility for visual impact. It appears entirely contemporary, a stark contrast to the historical inspiration.
Key features include Tabular Lining Figures, which preserve the classic seven segment format, and its Stylistic Alternate letterforms that bring in additional digital and monospaced character. These aren’t decorative nods; they’re functional variations that let the design shift between contexts. Beyond these, Mux includes automatic fractions, case-sensitive punctuation, slashed zero, localized forms, and support for over 200 Latin-based languages. It comes in 7 weights from Light to Black, each with matching italics. The full family is also available as a variable font.■
